Embracing the Intersectionality of YOUR Identity in Trump's America

If you listened to the very first episode of LGBTea, it begins in the middle of me attempting to summarize one of many undocumented student stories. This one in particular belongs to Julio Salgado, an educated, queer, undocumented, artist and activist. The intersectionality of being Julio is something a lot of us non-white, non-male, queers can relate to. But, the most important part of his story is what he chose to make of his situation. Julio embraced his identity, which is easier said than done for someone dealing with social barriers attacking all aspects of their identity.

With that said, I hope you too can learn a little something from our real heroes--social justice activists. On November 9th, the day after you-know-who became president, I found myself in a sea of love as I walked the streets of San Francisco with thousands of my closest friends. I learned really quickly that the only way we are going to get through these next 4 years is with our own support for each other. I felt safe, I felt love, and I felt optimistic. In a way, it helped me cope with a reality I was not ready for. Julio Salgado, for example, connected with other activist artists to "...change the anti-immigrant narrative." Maybe you can't draw to save your life but there are many ways to join the resistance. Just think about what makes you angry, and surely you will find that you are not alone! Maybe its the way your people are being treated, or maybe the way your friends, neighbors, co-workers, or parents are being treated. If you are not angry, then perhaps read any headline on your local newspaper, or turn on your television, because you, my friend, need to pay attention. If you are in the Bay Area, here are a few ways you can join.

Don't forget to tune in every Friday, 3-4. Give us a call, let us know how you are changing the narrative of your identity!

I will leave you with the words that changed my attitude towards politics:

Turn on to politics, or politics will turn on you.

-Ralph Nader
