Rupaul saying The Realness on her show Rupaul's Drag Race

CUE Rupaul's Drag Race!

CUE Paris Is Burning!

CUE... The very limited amount of LGBT mainstream content.

Anecdotally, I found that a lot of people think that the Kardashians coined some of the most popular LGBT vocabulary such as "YAS" and "OKURRR!" That is definitely not the case. Usually, credit needs to be given where it is due.

Paris is Burning (1990) showcases ballroom culture in the east coast. The "ballroom" was a place where LGBT people of color (but open to everyone) was a place to gather and have our existence validated. In the ballroom, queer children were dressed up as whatever category they wanted.

For example:

School boy realness from Paris is Burning

If you brought the look and you embodied the category, you were serving realness. Serving is another way of delivering. The ballroom was where queer people of color could act out their dreams, live their fantasy and learn that we could be whatever we wanted. In the ballroom, the YAS was prominent, the realness, serving, and voguing. Voguing wasn't a dance that Madonna invented. Voguing stemmed from an art form born in the ballroom. The children copied the poses in fashion magazine spread and turned it into a dance. Voguing now is part of a huge dance culture. For videos on voguing click here!

ClevverTv did an AWESOME VIDEO on voguing HERE!

My goal was to definitely just help you guys learn where a lot of our LGBT vocabulary stemmed from.

Have an awesome day and don't forget to tune in to LGBTea every FRIDAY from 3pm-4pm at ksfsmedia
